Mega Maritime

Anyone involved in Maritime Transport talks about it; regardless of being a shipper, a forwarder, a terminaloperator, a regulator, you name it! It's about Mega-Ships, Mega-Alliances,.... . Some claim it's a blessing, others say it's a pain in the Supply Chain .Some European associations think it is about time to find out what it really is. Dialogue is the best way to do this. Such a dialogue on European level will take place on December, 3rd.

Next December 3rd, FEPORT will host a Stakeholders’ conference involving all maritime logistics and supply chain actors. The conference will gather representatives of more than 15 stakeholders’ organizations representing industry, trade unions and NGOs who shall start a dialogue about some of the current and futures challenges for the logistics and supply chains in Europe.

European maritime logistics and supply chains are facing big challenges resulting from the continuous increase in the size of ships. These last years, different parties of the chain have provided responses to ensure the effective supply of goods to end consumers and customers but we are now reaching a situation where fragmented initiatives cannot reasonably constitute sustainable responses to the challenges.

Indeed, a variety of cascading effects on the maritime logistics and supply chain reveal some key issues to be addressed: congestion of port terminals and roads, security of supply, investment in (big, transhipment and short sea) ports and hinterland connections infrastructure, urgency for simplification of administrative procedures and use of digitalization, accelerated obsolescence of terminal equipment etc…but above all, there is an urgent need to have a better knowledge of the needs and expectations of each party of the chain otherwise the possibility of sustainable solutions will be jeopardized.

Dialogue and cooperation between actors of the maritime logistics and supply chains are essential to transform risks and weaknesses into opportunities.

The conference which is entitled “Why does an efficient logistics chain require close dialogue” is also an invitation for dialogue from industry to institutional stakeholders and we are looking forward to having the support of the European institutions to this initiative.
